Andy Routledge is a theatre director and dramaturg whose practice spans new writing, reimagined classics and community‑driven performance. His work regularly explores complex relationships to home and place and often incorporates direct address. His productions have been presented at more than 200 venues across the UK and Europe, including Arcola, Royal & Derngate, Theatre by the Lake, Royal Exchange, Curve, The Ustinov Studio, Summerhall, Prague Fringe, HOME, The Minack, Nottingham Playhouse, Theatre Royal Plymouth and VAULT Festival.

His work has been recognised nationally and internationally, including a Fringe Review Must See Award (Prague Fringe), a New York Soho Playhouse IFES nomination, and was shortlisted for The Filipa Bragança Award. He was shortlisted for the RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award in 2022 and reached the top 4 in 2024.

Andy is currently receiving artist development from the RSC and has taken part in residencies with directors Rob Icke and Declan Donnellan. He was the Resident Assistant Director at the Royal Exchange in 2016–2017.

He is a script reader for the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting and has written reports for longlisted writers since 2017. He has also read for RSC’s 37 Plays project, Theatre Uncut and the Young Vic.

Andy is the founder and Artistic Director of 60 Miles by Road or Rail, an arts organisation creating multidisciplinary projects inspired by communities’ relationships to place. Projects have included theatre, documentary filmmaking, award‑winning photography, shopping centre takeovers, audio installations and a 116‑page comic book anthology. 60 Miles was shortlisted for New Diorama’s Untapped Award in 2025.

Andy regularly works with students in drama schools, universities and schools. His previous roles include Resident Director for the Directors Charitable Foundation and United Learning’s Get Directing! programme, Associate Artist for the National Youth Theatre, and Young Company Director at Royal & Derngate.
