About Me
Hello! I’m Andy Routledge. I am a theatre director and dramaturg.
I develop new work by writers and theatre-makers and I make political projects in collaboration with local communities. My productions often explore complex relationships to home, and usually include direct address.
I have created original work with Royal & Derngate, Theatre by the Lake, Royal Exchange, Arcola, Curve, Summerhall, Prague Fringe, HOME and Vault Festival. My work has toured to over 200 venues across the UK and Europe.
I was shortlisted for the RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award in both 2022 and 2024 (reaching the top 4). I am currently receiving artist development from the RSC, which has included residencies with directors Rob Icke and Declan Donnellan.
My work has been shortlisted for The Filipa Bragança Award, winner of Fringe Review Must See Award 2024 and a New York Soho Playhouse IFES Nominee 2024 (Prague Fringe). I regularly direct projects at drama schools and universities.
I was previously the trainee director at Manchester’s Royal Exchange. I studied MFA Theatre Directing at Birkbeck and BA English with Creative Writing at University of Nottingham.
I am the founder and artistic director of 60 Miles by Road or Rail - an arts, heritage and community initiative in my hometown of Northampton. Our projects include a theatre production at Royal & Derngate, multiple documentary films, award-winning portrait photography, and a 116-page comic book anthology.
I am a script reader for the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting and have written script reports for longlisted writers since 2017. I was a script reader for RSC’s 37 Plays project.
My previous roles include: Resident Director for Directors Charitable Foundation and United Learning’s Get Directing! programme, Associate Artist for National Youth Theatre and Royal & Derngate’s Young Company Director.
